How do you put web content on top of an IMG tag in html or java-script, without making the img a background?

I’m a novice in HTML, but I want to keep small load-times while keeping a certain look. My background is therefore black, and I have an image stretched length-wise across the center portion where I’d like to add varying content. I have not been able to find a way to do this without it going to one side of the image or repositioning it, can someone help?
